The Hokkaido English Challenge (HEC) is an English speaking contest for first year students in Junior and Senior High School. It was initiated in 1994 by participants of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program as a way for Japanese students to display their English speech and comprehension abilities while building confidence and an increased drive to learn more.
HEC participants have the opportunity to win various English-related prizes, including a place at the HEC Summer Camp in July. The grand prize winners for both Junior and Senior High School will be rewarded with an all-expenses-paid trip to an English-speaking country of the students’ choice.
HEC is supported by the Hokkaido Board of Education and is sponsored by HAJET.
