Registration for HEC 2012 has begun!

Registration forms for the 2012 Hokkaido English Challenge are now available.  If you are interested in entering a student—or many students—please complete a registration form for each student and have it postmarked by Friday, February 24, 2012.  There are separate registration forms for junior high and senior high school participants, so please be sure to complete the appropriate form for your student.

Information about how to submit the registration form and how to pay the entry fee can be found in the HEC Guide 2012, which is also available online.  In addition to registration forms, there are many more documents with valuable information about this year’s HEC.  The following documents are now available:

  • HEC Guide (English and Japanese versions)
  • Test Preparation Packages (JHS & SHS)
  • Judging Rubrics (JHS & SHS)
  • Letter Pack (Letters to BOEs and to parents)
  • Approval letter from Hokkaido BOE (Japanese)

All these documents can be downloaded here:

The ‘HEC Guide for 2012’ is now available!

The ‘HEC Guide for 2012’ is now available!  The guide contains details on what the Hokkaido English Challenge is, dates, entry fees, how to register, and advice on how to succeed.  At this point, only the English version is available.  However, it is will presently be translated into Japanese and made available here by early November.  Additional useful documents referenced in the guide will be made available shortly as well.

The ‘HEC Guide 2012’ can be downloaded with the link below or requested directly from the HEC Coordinator:

HEC Guide 2012

For those of you who have been involved with HEC in past years, please take the time to read through the new guide, but in particular, please take note of the following changes and on which pages of the guide more information can be found:

1. HEC is now open to all Hokkaido ALTs regardless of who your employer is.  (Page 11)
2. The entry fee is now a flat rate of ¥2500 for every student. (Page 12)
3. There is a new HEC Scholarship available to students in financial need. (Page 12)
4. The registration and test deadlines are a little earlier this year. (Page 20)
5. All entries must be submitted in DVD format.  VHS will no longer be accepted. (Page 20)
6. The number of students who will be offered spots at this year’s HEC Summer Camp has slightly changed. (Page 5)

These points as well as more details concerning this year’s HEC Summer Camp can be found in the ‘HEC Guide 2012: Repeat Participant Supplement.’

Due to an unavoidable situation, last year’s HEC Summer Camp was not able to proceed as planned.  Last year’s winners have since been invited to attend this year’s HEC Summer Camp.  As a result, there will be some changes that may be of interest to past and new participants alike.  For more information concerning this year’s HEC Summer Camp, please see the ‘HEC Guide 2012: Repeat Participant Supplement’ available for download below or directly from the HEC Coordinator:

A New Year for HEC

The 2010-2011 HEC year is underway! Hopefully you have started to pick out students who may be interested in participating in this year’s HEC. We are also in need of test writers and judges for both the junior and senior divisions. Please contact me if you are interested in either position.

This years guide, posters, and letter pack are now available online. The HEC Guide 2011 provides details about the running of HEC this year. There is also a poster that can be used to advertise HEC around your schools (Please note that there are two versions: one JHS and one SHS). In the HEC Letter Pack 2011, you will find letters in both English and Japanese addressed to parents and schools. There are versions simply explaining HEC and versions requesting entry fees. Please be certain to give the correct version to the correct person.
